What changed since the first Drawquarium demo: all 20 listed updates

On September 18, 2026, the developer published a long list of changes since the May demo. This is that list, translated out of marketing language and into what it means for a player.

Context

The demo launched on Steam in April 2026; the developer refers to it as the May demo, and PC Gamer published a hands-on feature in May. The most common feedback, according to the developer, was that players liked drawing and watching the aquarium but wanted more to do. The September update is the response to that feedback.

This page summarises the developer’s own list. It is not a hands-on test of the current build, and it does not claim that every feature is available in the demo. The demo’s feature set was reduced after Steam Next Fest; the full game is where the complete list applies.

The four changes that matter most

Breeding

A collection becomes a lineage. Babies that grow up create long-term attachment and give relationships a mechanical consequence.

The editor rebuild

Stamps, fill improvements, zoom, saved palettes and editable fish lower the skill floor. This is what makes the game accessible to people who “can’t draw”.

Tank maintenance

Cleaning turns the aquarium from a diorama into a routine. It also gives the Golden Scale economy something to measure: a healthy tank.

Wallpaper Mode

The desktop companion is the differentiator. If it works reliably, Drawquarium can stay open all day; if it does not, it is just another window.

All 20 listed changes

The order below follows the developer’s announcement. “Why it matters” is our interpretation, not a quote.

#ChangeWhy it matters
01 Breeding and baby fish Fish can reproduce, and babies grow as they are fed. This turns a collection into a family tree — and gives long-term players a reason to keep pairs together.
02 More alive fish Fish react to food, bubbles, new arrivals and their surroundings, and can get excited or scared. Behaviour is now part of the spectacle, not just animation.
03 Tank maintenance Leftover food and debris stay until vacuumed. The tank has a state you can neglect, which makes cleaning a real part of the routine.
04 Golden Scales progression The currency now unlocks brushes, templates and customisation. It gives the sandbox a progression spine without a linear campaign.
05 Deeper aquarium customisation Rocks, driftwood, water level, sand, colours and more can be changed. Tanks can look genuinely different rather than sharing one background.
06 Custom lighting Lighting effects and caustics can be adjusted. This is the biggest visual upgrade: the same tank can read as daylight, dusk or night.
07 Bioluminescence Fish and plants can glow. It is both a creative tool and a readability aid in dark tanks.
08 Disco Mode Lasers, spotlights and techno music. A deliberately absurd mode that shows the game is not precious about realism.
09 Redesigned drawing editor The interface was rebuilt and drawing is described as smoother, faster and more intuitive. The editor is the core of the game, so this matters more than any single feature.
10 More drawing tools Zoom, improved fill bucket, stamps for textures/shapes/eyes/fins, custom templates and saved palettes. These are the tools that make non-artists able to finish something.
11 Editable finished fish Fish are no longer permanently locked once finished. You can revise a creation later, which lowers the cost of experimenting.
12 Animations, sizes and behaviours Fish can swim differently, at different sizes, with different behaviours. This is what stops a tank from looking like a clone army.
13 Drag fish around You can grab and drag a fish through the aquarium. A small feature with a large effect on feeling in control.
14 Multiple aquariums and a global fish list Fish can move between aquariums, and a searchable global list helps find a creation by name. This is the organisational layer the first demo lacked.
15 Idea Generator A built-in prompt tool for days when the canvas is blank. It pairs well with the game’s templates and our external idea generator.
16 More music and ambient sound New music and ambience can be mixed to set the tank’s atmosphere. Useful both for play sessions and for wallpaper mode.
17 Productivity tools A checklist, journal, timer and clock with the date and weekday were added. The aquarium is now explicitly a place to work alongside.
18 Goal task list A list of gameplay goals gives the sandbox direction. It is the closest thing to a tutorial spine without becoming a story campaign.
19 Wallpaper Mode improvements More reliable, audio continues when switching modes, and the desktop experience moved closer to the original vision.
20 Performance, saving and stability Automatic graphics detection, better performance, drawing autosaves and backup saves. The least glamorous change and the one that protects everything else.

If you played the May demo

The biggest difference is not visual. It is that the game now has things to maintain and things to unlock. The May demo was a drawing toy with fish; the September update describes a care loop, a progression currency and a reason to return. If the old demo felt shallow, the new systems are aimed directly at that criticism.

The second difference is control. Editable fish, multiple aquariums, the global fish list and the ability to drag fish around make the tank feel like a workspace rather than a screensaver. The third is the desktop layer: Wallpaper Mode plus the journal, checklist, timer and clock turn it into a companion app.

What the list does not say

The announcement is a feature list, not a manual. It does not give numbers for growth, breeding, Golden Scale earnings, population limits or cleaning frequency. It also does not say which of these features are in the current demo versus only the full game. We have kept those gaps visible throughout the site rather than filling them with invented values.

For the current demo’s limits, see the demo guide. For the care systems in practice, see fish care and relationships.
